Women in the Law: Leadership, Equality, Inclusion

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for our Women in the Law event on Tuesday evening.

We are exceptionally grateful to our fantastic chair Dearbhail McDonald and panel Caoilfhionn Gallagher KC, Catherine Berney, Clare Murray and Justice Karen O’Connor.

There were so many great insights and pearls of wisdom. We especially liked the following:

  • Build your own network – it doesn’t need to be at the golf club or the private members’ club.

  • Work out where you want to be - find your ‘North Star’ and focus on that.

  • Keep a note of your achievements and make your case unassailable.

  • Your career doesn’t need to be a straight line from trainee to partner, or pupil to KC – there are seasons for things, and other ways of working.

  • Everyone (including men) has to make compromises – talk to others about how they ‘do it all’. You will often find a life partner whose career has taken a backseat, an extended support network, a team of staff – or that someone is Thatcheresque in their sleeping habits (but like Mrs T in that respect only).

We’d also like to thank our hosts Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP for kindly sponsoring the event, and the women of the LILA committee, India Fahy, Kerri McGuigan, Eorann O'Connor and Ciara Moore for their hard work in organising the event.
