Webinar: Northern Ireland’s Road to Rights - A Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland

LILA is pleased to host its first webinar in a series of events aimed at marking Northern Ireland’s centenary year. The series, ‘Northern Ireland’s Road to Rights’, will be an opportunity to reflect on human rights developments in the north of Ireland over the past century, as well as the challenges that lie ahead as Northern Ireland’s place within the UK, the island of Ireland, and Europe continues to be hotly debated.

The first event will be a webinar and discussion with Professor Colin Harvey of Queens University, on the topic of a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland at 18:00 on Thursday 18 March 2021.

The event will be an opportunity to consider the Bill of Rights in the context of ongoing discussions of constitutional change and the right to self-determination in the north of Ireland. As post-Brexit Northern Ireland faces a future without some of the safeguards it previously enjoyed, the issue of human rights and how best to protect them has never been more relevant.

To register and receive an invite to the webinar, please email contact@londonirishlawyers.co.uk

Attendees are encouraged to email questions in advance. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions during the event.

Colin Harvey is Professor of Human Rights Law, Queen’s University Belfast and a former Head of the School of Law and Director of the Human Rights Centre. He has held visiting positions at the University of Michigan, Fordham University, and the LSE. Professor Harvey was a member of the REF2014 Law sub-panel and the REF2014 Equality and Diversity Advisory Panel. He has served as a Commissioner on the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, and as a member of the Northern Ireland Higher Education Council. He is a member of the Academic Panel at Doughty Street Chambers, a Senior Research Associate at the Refugee Law Initiative, School of Advanced Study, University of London and has taught on the George Washington University – Oxford University Summer Programme on International Human Rights Law, and the Master’s in International Human Rights Law at Oxford University.
